History of the island:
Zakynthos like many of the Greek islands has a very rich history having been invaded by many groups.
It was under Athenian control from the 5 th Century BC until the Spartans overtook them, followed by the Macedonians, Romans and Byzantines. The Venetians are maybe the best known rulers of Zakynthos, having called the island Zante;a name it is often still called. The Venetians ruled from 1484 until 1797 and they left their mark on the architectural style of the buildings, with the capital town in particular having a strong Venetian feel. The island gained independence and joined the new Greek state in 1864. In the Second World War the island suffered from German and Italian occupation and times were particularly hard for the islanders, with a shortage of food and harsh conditions until the war was over.
The most significant event in recent history was an earthquake in 1953 which destroyed many buildings on the island, in the capital town only 3 buildings were left standing, but many villages managed to escape serious devastation from the earthquake (such as Volimes in the north and Keri in the south) . When the houses and other buildings destroyed in the earthquake were rebuilt it was to very high anti-seismic standards.
The residents of Zakynthos have long been known for their friendliness and love of poetry and dancing.
The most famous Zakynthian is Dionysios Solomos
(1798 – 1857) a national Greek poet, whose poem “hymn to liberty” formed the lyrics to the Greek National Anthem.
